When I first moved to New York City, I was astounded by the volume of objects littered across the sidewalks, discarded by one and awaiting retrieval by another. Such a system seems more circular than most, giving the item one last chance to reach redemption. Though, what percentage of objects actually make it into a new home, I'm not sure.
I know that I, however, have picked up countless assortments of things off the streets to carry home - vases, chandeliers, tables, shelves, paintings, and other decor items (as well as two discarded bike tires and a vacuum). After cultivating this habit for a few years, I returned home to Georgia to find a heap of broken furniture legs on the side of a neighborhood road. I collected them, thrilled, and ended up creating two podium-like sculptures out of them, hardly spending a penny.
